Etappe 1  Goes Roundtrip (Zuid Beverland)

17 July 2011

The first etappe was a roundtrip of the Zuid Beverland island/peninsula starting and ending in Goes. After the rainy weather from the night before, we were relieved to see blue skies and sunshine. Soon after leaving the town of Goes, Tanja found herself in animal heaven.... everywhere you looked there were horses and ponies, sheep or cows. A real highlight was when we stopped for a drink and a rabbit came hopping out of the bushes and sat on the road beside us, a mere 2 meters away!

We soon saw our first water and dikes. Another moment to remember was when we saw a HUGE car transport boat coming through a lock, with just centimeters of space on either side.... !
Tanja finally got to see her first Dutch windmill... live ! Then another variety of animals... this time an ibex (large goat) and a field full of llamas.

The weather stayed nice until mid-afternoon, when exactly as forecast, dark black clouds filled the sky, the wind increased dramatically and it began to pour with rain. We had foolishly decided to just take rain capes instead of our real rain gear and they immediately proved themselves totally inadequate for the weather. With each gust of wind they flew up around our ears and we were very soon soaked to the skin.
By the time we made it back to Goes though, everything had dried up again so after a nice hot shower and a change of clothes, we were able to explore the town in the sunshine again before returning to the Hotel for dinner.
