The Battle of Culloden
(16 April 1746) was the final clash of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. The
Jacobites army, led by Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie
Prince Charlie", was decimated by the army of the Hanoverian
British Government commanded by the Duke of Cumberland .. Culloden dealt
the Jacobite
cause a
final bloody defeat and not only ended the attempts to restore the Stuart
line to the throne but also brought an end to the Highland Clans system
in Scotland. It was the last battle ever to be fought on
British
soil. |
